Jordan Rhodes signs for Wednesday

1 February 2017

Sheffield Wednesday have signed prolific striker Jordan Rhodes from Premier League side Middlesbrough on loan until the end of the season, with the move to become permanent thereafter for an undisclosed fee.

The 26-year-old arrives in S6 with an outstanding pedigree and a terrific goal return, which has seen the Scotland international become one of the hottest properties in the country.

Beginning his career at Ipswich, where he rose through the Portman Road academy, Rhodes had brief loan spells with Oxford, Rochdale and Brentford before hitting the high notes with Huddersfield.

The sharp-shooter signed for the Terriers in July 2009 and his deadly finishing in front of goal saw his stock rise considerably, as well as Town, whom he helped gain promotion to the Championship in 2011/12.

His haul of 40 goals from 46 games was an incredible return from an incredible season for the striker.

It was during this campaign that Rhodes achieved the remarkable feat of scoring four goals at Hillsborough in the 4-4 draw with the Owls.

In total, Rhodes plundered 87 goals from 129 starts for the Terriers before joining Blackburn Rovers in August 2012.

In typical Rhodes fashion, his Rovers debut was marked with two goals in 5-3 win away at Bristol City, as the lethal marksman took the step up to life in the Championship firmly in his stride.

His top-notch goals-to-games ratio continued at Ewood Park and in three and a half years at the club, he struck a further 85 goals in 158 starts.

Premier League-bound Middlesbrough came calling for his services in February 2016, where Rhodes scored a number of crucial goals to aid the Riverside club’s rise to the top flight.

His maiden goal for Aitor Karanka’s side came in the final minute in a 1-1 draw away at MK Dons to salvage a priceless point.

With the race for automatic promotion going down to the wire in 2015/16, perhaps Rhodes’ biggest contributions came late in the campaign in a clash at Bolton, where his goals on 73 and 89 minutes saw Boro come from behind to win 2-1.

Rhodes has made six Premier League appearances for Middlesbrough this season and now joins Wednesday in their battle for promotion.
