Stalemate at Spotland

Sheffield Wednesday posted a hard-earned point at Rochdale on Saturday as both sides drew a blank in the final third.

Rochdale had the best chance in a game of few openings but Gary Jones missed a second half penalty to ensure the contest ended goalless.

The game set off at a lively pace, though, with both sides making their attacking intentions clear.

Dale's Joe Thompson forced a diving save from Stephen Bywater inside two minutes before Owls loanee Michail Antonio twice burst past his marker in the early stages only for the final ball to fall wide of the mark.

Chris Lines floated an accurate free kick to the back post midway through the first half and Rob Jones climbed high but the skipper's header whistled over the crossbar.

Chris O'Grady - out to impress against his former employers - turned and drilled a snaphot into the midriff of ex-Owls keeper David Lucas moments later as the visitors looked to gain the upper hand.

Jones was then unfortunate to see a further two headers miss the target - the first of which bounced up and over the bar - and Wednesday finished the opening period in the ascendancy but went down the tunnel level pegging.

The second half started as the first had ended with the Owls on top and Gary Madine went close immediately after the resumption following good work down the flank from Antonio.

Rochdale responded with Kevin Long blasting over the bar from close range and Jason Kennedy brought a good save from Bywater moments later.

The Owls introduced Ryan Lowe just past the hour mark and the striker soon had the ball in the net only to be pulled back for a foul on Stephen Darby.

The hosts went straight upfield and Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro gave Wednesday a scare with a far post header that rolled just past the post.

But on 79 minutes, Rochdale won a penalty after Jones was adjudged to have tripped Kennedy in the box.

Dale captain Jones stepped up and hit the spot kick hard and low only to see the ball smash against the post and back out to safety.
