Owls ousted by Blackpool

The Owls' FA Cup campaign came to end at Hillsborough on Tuesday as Blackpool ran out 3-0 winners in the fourth round replay.

The Seasiders took the lead after six minutes when Matt Phillips swept his strike into the bottom corner before Lomana Tresor LuaLua finished emphatically to double Blackpool's lead.

And the game was put beyond any doubt minutes after the restart as Ludovic Sylvestre charged into the area to side-foot past Stephen Bywater.

The Owls made no fewer than seven changes for the cup clash against Blackpool and were quick out of the blocks with two chances in the opening two minutes.

First Ryan Lowe saw his low strike saved by Matthew Gilks with just over a minute on the clock before Chris Lines' had his effort blocked at the last by Blackpool defender Alex Baptiste.

But it was the in-form Seasiders that struck first blood in the contest through Matt Phillips after six minutes.

A bobbling ball just outside of the area was well controlled by the midfielder, who took aim and fired into the bottom corner past the outstretched arm of Bywater.

The Championship side were looking dangerous on the attack and doubled their advantage eight minute later, and in some style, as LuaLua bent an unstoppable strike into the top corner.

There was little Bywater could do to keep out the former Newcastle United striker's curled effort which nestled nicely into the back of the net.

As the Owls aimed to half the arrears, Chris Sedgwick delivered a dangerous ball into the box but Reda Johnson was unable to direct his header on target.

But back came Blackpool, who quickly surged upfield with the lively Matt Phillips driving into the area and, as the ball landed at the feet of LuaLua, the striker this time saw his curler land just over the bar on top of the net.

The visitors had Gilks to thank for preserving their two-goal lead ten minutes before the interval.

As Sedgwick whipped in a corner from the left, Rob Jones rose high at the back stick and powered his header on target but Gilks was alert on his goal line to push to safety.

But eight minutes after the restart, the Tangerines took a firm grip of the game and went three goals to the good, as Sylvestre rounded off a neat move with a well-taken goal.

A clever back heel from Matt Phillips released the on rushing Sylvestre, who darted into the area and calmly side-footed beyond Bywater.

Matt Phillips should have added to his own tally midway through the second period, latching on to LuaLua's through ball, but finished wide with the goal at his mercy.

Defeat against Blackpool brings an end to Wednesday's FA Cup campaign, who now prepare for the long trip to Exeter on Saturday.
