There was more away day joy for the Owls on Tuesday evening at St Andrew’s as the visitors claimed the points with a 2-0 win.
Wednesday came out all guns blazing after the break and their pressure paid off as Stevie May capped a superb move forward with a fine finish to put the Owls ahead.
And in front of a buoyant following from Sheffield, Jeremy Helan made sure the points were heading back to Hillsborough, as the second half substitute fired home from inside the area.
The game also saw the Owls’ impressive defensive record continue; this the sixth clean sheet in nine games.
Birmingham made a lively start to game under the floodlights as Clayton Donaldson blazed over the bar when the ball sat nicely from the edge of the area after four minutes.
But Wednesday, who went into clash undefeated away from home, issued a warning shot at the other end with Atdhe Nuhiu placing his volley agonisingly wide from Chris Maguire’s centre.
Blues skipper Paul Robinson then saw his diving header fly just wide and Wesley Thomas diverted David Cotterill’s cross wide in a busy start to the match.
Brek Shea then angled his strike into the side netting as the hosts had the edge in terms of chances created.
And Birmingham were desperately unlucky not to make the breakthrough on the half hour when Paul Caddis unleased a fierce drive which came crashing back off the upright and into play.
The Blues had the best of the first half chances but it was Wednesday first to threaten after the restart when Jacques Maghoma fed for Maguire, who cut inside and curled wide of the far post.
Wednesday then rattled the woodwork as Darren Randolph parried Liam Palmer’s daisy-cutter into Maghoma’s path but the winger struck the post from a tight angle on the rebound.
The visitors were looking much more likely after the interval and gave Birmingham cause for concern with a flurry of dangerous attacks with May at the heart of the action.
And the Scot got his reward past the hour, capping a wonderful move forward with a sweet finish in front of the travelling supporters.
Nuhiu found May with a clever touch outside the box and the ex-St Johnstone man did the rest, jinking past his defender before slamming into the net.
Birmingham, though, almost issued an immediate response through skipper Paul Robinson but Jose Semedo made a brave challenge six yards out to thwart the danger.
But as the hosts pressed forward, the Owls were able to wrap up the points in the final minute through Helan.
Maguire picked up possession in the area and teed up the pace who thumped home from 12 yards to seal a stunning victory on the road.
