Steel City Fit Club nominated for National Lottery Award!

6 July 2016

A fitness project based at Hillsborough and ran by the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme has been nominated for a National Lottery Award to honour the achievements and popularity of the project – and they need your votes to win!

The Community Programme’s Steel City Fit Club, led by former Owls striker John Pearson, has been recognised by the National Lottery Good Causes organisation for the innovative ways the project works with participants to improve their fitness and well-being through low-impact football related fitness activities and nutritional advice.

The fit club, which comes under Sport England and Sporta’s ‘Make Your Move’ programme, aims to get more women, older people and inactive groups into sport.

Participants Ken Hargreaves, 69, and Derek Hargreaves, 83, will be representing the club’s Community Programme on Saturday night’s National Lottery TV show to talk about how the club has helped them both how to lead a healthy lifestyle.

The fit club has led to reductions in blood pressure, resting heart rate and body mass index scores among most of the participants. In the long-term the project hopes to help reduce diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, strokes and other serious diseases.
