Owls coach Neil Thompson says the Owls Under-23s have done well in what has been a tough week following their 1-0 win over QPR at Hillsborough on Friday afternoon.

George Hirst’s early finish was enough to grab all three points for the Owls who managed to stay defensively solid, despite heavy pressure from the Rs late in the game.

It was Wednesday’s second win of the week after beating Hull 3-2 on Monday.

Thompson said: “We’ve had a tough week.

“Having been to Hull on Monday I knew today would be a big ask for them physically, but we’ve come through it.

“We put one away early on but we could have killed it off I have to say.

“There were a lot of tired bodies out there at the end but fair play to them because they put a really big shift in on Monday night.

“Dan Wallis made a couple of great saves today and the two centre halves have headed everything and defended really solidly. Everyone in the team has worked their socks off to get the clean sheet.”

Wednesday remain top of the Development League and Thompson believes the players will benefit from their winning mentality.

The Under-23s head coach added: “The lads have put an incredible shift in the last ten games, we’ve won eight out of our last nine.”

“It’s a fantastic effort from the boys and it stems from having a solid base and not giving too many goals away.

“It’s good for players to be playing in a team that has a winning mentality.

“It’s about development but it’s about being a winner as well.

“This might be one of many chances for a title or it may be their only chance for a title in their careers, so they’ve got to treasure that because no matter what level you play at you’ve got to be the best you can.”
