Continue the consistency

17 January 2017

The Owls’ Under-23s extended their winning run to four games with a 4-1 win over Bolton to go top of the league and head coach Neil Thompson has encouraged his side to maintain their fine form.

Wednesday posted a routine win with goals from George Hirst, James Murphy, Vincent Sasso and Sean Clare after an early opener from the Trotters.

Thompson said: “The first-half was a bit disappointing. We weren’t playing the tempo we wanted, and we had too many touches on the ball.

“It was a sloppy goal from our point of view – to give away a cheap corner and they got their noses in front. Then we got the penalty and did enough to be level.

“Second half, we upped the tempo and dominated the game, which is what we needed to do. We moved the ball quicker, and created a lot more opportunities.”

Wednesday’s youngsters have been on an exciting run, with only two defeats in the last nine to leave the team perched at the summit.

Thompson explained with the quality of players in the side, they can continue to push on with ten games remaining:

“It’s nice to keep the run going. I want to have that consistency every game, to keep ticking on.

“We have got ourselves in a good position now, and have got a good team.

“But we know that there are going to be challenges ahead.”
