A very meticulous Carlos Carvalhal has spoken in depth of the hard work behind the scenes in order for Wednesday to reap the rewards of their positive play.
The key word and perhaps the most important area of focus for the head coach is ‘efficiency.’
Given the way Wednesday are performing, creating and limiting opposition, Carlos firmly believes there is a strong dynamic in place that is vital moving forward.
A boost in terms of efficiency – improving the ratio between chances created and goals scored – is the clear aim over the coming weeks.
In-form Fulham, who had previously put five goals past Huddersfield on home soil, were limited at Craven Cottage last weekend but salvaged a point in stoppage time.
Had Wednesday scored the second and third goals that looked likely in the first half, it could have been a very different outcome.
Working hard to correct this, Carlos said: “We have analysed the games since Brentford and we remember that we could have won that game because we had a minimum of five or six clear chances in the first half.
“In that moment we changed everything in our team. We do our analysis and the way that we are playing, the football we are playing, I think we are playing better than last season.
“We are a better team, the big difference is the efficiency is not the same.
“Last season we create one or another chance and we score for 1-0. After we could score the second in the fast attack and kill the games often.
“This season, so far, the efficiency of the team is not very high in terms of killing games. We are creating more chances and playing better football.
“We’ve had two accidents, like all the teams can have. They were Brighton at home, even though in my opinion we didn’t deserve to lose the game and against Ipswich, where we deserved to lose.
“But we reacted fantastically at Fulham and consider ourselves unlucky not to win but the performance of the team was very high.”
Should the Owls build on those positives from Craven Cottage and take their hard and quality work from the training pitch into the games, with a little patience too, Carlos believes his side can add points on in threes and start climbing the Championship.
He continued: “We must go to the pitch and try and do better and better. A lot of things can happen, we could create just one chance and win 1-0, this can happen.
“We can attack a lot, create a lot of chances but not score. We can play normal football and win, these can happen but to me like a coach and my staff, we want to be patient, we are working hard and my players are playing with heart.
“In December we play six games so we will be discussing 18 points and a lot can happen, we are very competitive.”
