Keeping up the pace

17 January 2017

With the Owls occupying the last of the play-off spots, Tom Lees says Wednesday must keep up with the pace of their rivals.

For the second time this season, Wednesday overcame Huddersfield to strengthen their grip on a top six spot.

But with tough games on the horizon, not least of all a trip to Brighton on Friday, Lees insists Wednesday must maintain their momentum.

“We’ve got to aim to stay with these teams,” he said. “For the fans, there are the bragging rights as well with three Yorkshire sides in the top six at the moment but it is still early.

“You can’t give teams too much of a gap because we are in the second half of the season.

“But three Yorkshire teams in the play-offs right now adds a bit of spice, definitely.”

Lees is well aware of the difficulties that face Wednesday in their coming visit to The Amex.

The Seagulls’ home record reflects their lofty status in the Championship.

And defeated by Preston last time out – their first league loss since 10 September - Chris Hughton’s side will be aiming for a response on home soil and Lees added:

“It will be tough, they are very good at home and they are a top team. People might look at the point we got at Preston as a good point now because they are a very strong team.

“We just have to keep going as we have been.”
