Kieran Lee extends contract with Sheffield Wednesday

27 July 2016

Kieran Lee has extended his contract with Sheffield Wednesday, signing a new three-year deal that runs until summer 2019.

The 28-year-old joined Wednesday in May 2012 after falling out of contract with Oldham.

From then, the midfield ace has gone from strength to strength during his spell at Hillsborough.

In total, Lee has made 142 appearances, chipping in with 14 goals.

After four seasons so far with the Owls, it wasn’t until the final game in his second campaign that Lee notched his first goal for the club away at Ipswich.

But since then, scoring goals has become a big part of the midfielder’s game, underlined by his haul of seven in 2015/16 – the highest tally of his career.

Lee hit a number of crucial goals throughout that campaign, most notably a key strike in the play-off semi final victory over Brighton.

He made 52 appearances for Wednesday last term - unquestionably a key performer in the Owls’ engine room and regarded highly by head coach Carlos Carvalhal.

He told swfc.co.uk: “I’m obviously delighted to have signed a new contract to extend my time here at the club.

“I’ve enjoyed it here from the very first day and can see the club is moving in the right direction and I want to be part of it.

“Obviously our aim is to get back into the Premier League and I believe we can do it. We came so close last season but the lads are refreshed and focused and ready to go again.

“You can see that in the training and how close the boys are, we’ve just had a good trip to Portugal as a squad and we all feel the benefit of that.”

Popular as well with the fans, Lee added: “I want to thank all the fans for their support for me while I’ve been here.

“They’ve been great with me in the stands and on social media. They were fantastic all last season and particularly at Wembley, where I’ve never seen support like it.

“Hopefully we can give them what they deserve this season.”
