Owls back derby cycle challenge

28 July 2016

Former Sheffield Wednesday player Jon Newsome is set to take part in a charity bike challenge travelling an impressive 72 miles from Sheffield to Cleethorpes to raise money for Weston Park Cancer Charity.

Newsome will be joining former Sheffield United player Dane Whitehouse and cancer survivor Marvin Henshaw to complete the ‘Steel City Challenge’ to raise money for the charity and in memory of Marvin’s cousin Craig.

Last year’s challenge raised more than £15,000 for the charity and Sheffield Wednesday fans are encouraged to help raise even more this year.

Marvin’s friends, Jon and Dane will lead a team of 11 cyclists each from Sheffield to Cleethorpes covering a 72 mile distance and will be greeted by family and friends in Cleethorpes with a well-deserved meal of fish and chips!

Charity fundraising manager, Sarah Cross, said: “We’re very grateful to Marvin and his fellow cyclists from both teams who are once again climbing on their bikes to raise money in support of those fighting cancer across the region.

“Sadly, Marvin has seen first-hand the devastating effects that cancer can have and with his generous support the charity can continue funding projects that will ultimately help improve the lives of patients and their families living with a cancer diagnosis now and in the future.

“The cancer charity works very closely with both Sheffield football clubs so whether you’re an Owls fan or an Owls fan, we’d encourage football fans to support their team through this fundraiser.”

Fans and friends are being encouraged to support the ride and support their team via JustGiving or text at www.justgiving.com/ClubTrip-SWFC or text 70070 followed by FRAA55.
