Owls bow out of FA Youth Cup

1 February 2017

The Owls’ Under-18s bowed out of the FA Youth Cup against Premier League Chelsea, who reached the quarter finals for the eighth successive year.

The tie was hosted by Aldershot – the home of the Blues’ youth side – and a rainy evening saw Chelsea dominate proceedings to progress.

Goals from Trevoh Chalobah, Ike Ugbo, Mason Mount and Callum Hudson-Odoi did the damage as the Londoners had too much for Wednesday.

Having lifted the trophy in five of the last seven seasons, Chelsea were always the favourites and they did not disappoint, going through the gears to emerge 4-0 winners.

Owls coach Steven Haslam, though, took the positives from the boys pitting their wits against the best in the business.

He said: “Obviously the result left the lads disappointed but the whole cup run and playing Chelsea serves as great experience.

“Chelsea have won the FA Youth Cup three years on the trot, they are unbeaten in the league, so it was always going to be an uphill battle.

“And I have to give loads of credit to Chelsea, they are a top, top side and the game was a learning curve for us. They and Manchester City set the standard.

“But let’s not take away how well the boys have done to get where they did. In previous rounds, we were the favourites, but the players went out there, did their jobs, and won both games convincingly.”
