Reaching high levels

28 April 2017

Carlos Carvalhal says selecting a matchday squad of 18 is a tough job given the levels of his players in training this week.

The head coach has been impressed with the way his side have got back to work behind the scenes after posting their fifth straight win last Saturday against Derby.

As preparations continue for the clash with Ipswich at Portman Road, Carlos said:

“I must tell you that it would be fair to put all the players in the squad because they are training very, very well.

“The levels have been high, everybody is working to the team and they are showing positive signals.

“But I cannot be with justice to everybody. If I was to be fair, I must put all of them in the squad but we can’t, we must only choose 18.”

Midfield duo Sam Hutchinson and Kieran Lee will be assessed ahead of the game.

Hutchinson has returned to training this week, while Lee made his long-awaited return to action last time out against the Rams.

Carlos continued: “Sam started training this week but we don’t know if he will be available or not.

“Let’s see because he has not played for a long time and we have to be careful about the situation.

“Also with Kieran, he was out a long time, he came back to play and played very good - especially in the first 45 minutes.

“It’s not just a question if they can play or not but when they play and the days after the game, we must care about them.

“Kieran had one or two days after the game more tired than normal but this is to be expected.

“It was not an easy week to him but we are doing our best to recover and the most important is that if he can be in the 18, he can be in a good condition to help the team.”
