Owls shine in Youth Cup clash

9 December 2016

The Owls made sure of their place in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup with an impressive 4-0 victory over ten-man Luton at Hillsborough.

A Jordan Lonchar hat-trick and a goal from Fraser Preston sealed Wednesday’s progress in the competition, where they will face Gillingham next-up at Hillsborough.

Wednesday made a bright start to the game, though it was the visitors who threatened first as Arthur Read hit low across goal and forced a fine save from the in-form Dan Wallis.

Luton then saw good chances go to waste, the best of which fell to Freddy Hinds who dragged wide at the near post before Wednesday took the initiative.

The lively Preston whipped a wonderful ball into the box after turning his marker and Lonchar applied the finish from close range.

The lead was doubled on the stroke of half time with a well-crafted set piece, as Connor Kirby and Liam Waldock combined to tee-up Preston from close.

Wallis was called upon after the interval to make a smart save from Jack Snelus and Hinds missed the target with a volley in a frantic opening to the second period.

But it was the Owls who registered next to extend their lead as Lonchar nodded home at the back stick from a first class Joe West delivery.

Luton’s afternoon took another turn for the worse when defender Harry Bean’s earlier yellow was upgraded to red and the Owls made their numerical advantage count when Lonchar fired home his hat-trick.

To cap a fine day for the Owls youngsters, Wallis kept the clean sheet intact by saving a late penalty from Snelus and Wednesday now look forward to a clash with the Gills in round four.

Owls: Wallis, Brennan, Cook, Lee, West, Hughes (Reaney 81), Kirby (Swaine 89), Waldock, Price (Hunt 75), Preston, Lonchar
