Owls win Ipswich thriller

4 March 2017

The Under-18s followed last week’s impressive win at Leeds with a 3-2 home success against Ipswich.

An Alex Hunt penalty paved the path for victory and further goals from Alie Bangura and Liam Waldock sealed the points.

Ipswich twice hit back but ultimately to no avail as the Owls posted back to back wins.

The hosts were good value for the lion’s share of the game too and hit the front early when Hunt calmly slotted his spot-kick home after Waldock was fouled in the area.

Fraser Preston - called up to the Scotland Under-19 international squad this week – went close to doubling the lead but shot narrowly wide.

Owls keeper Arijus Brazinskas then made a five save to protect the advantage, which proved key as his side went 2-0 up just after the interval when Hunt made a surging run down the right before crossing low for Bangura to tap in.

Ipswich promptly reduced the arrears when Wednesday failed to clear a corner and went close to a leveller but Brazinskas saved well with his feet.

And again that was a pivotal moment as the Owls made the game safe when Waldock played a neat give and go with Bangura and struck into the bottom corner.

Still there was time for the visitors to score again as Brazinskas was given no chance from distance but Wednesday held on in the closing moments and emerged triumphant.

Wednesday: Brazinskas, Brennan, Brown, Hunt (West 65) Williams, Cook, Price, Waldock, Bangura (Hughes 77), Preston, Gavrilov (Borukov 46)
