Proud of this group

27 September 2016

Carlos Carvalhal said he was proud to be in charge of this group of Wednesday players after they posted a 1-0 win against Blackburn for their first away victory of the season.

Steven Fletcher’s first half goal, the 100th of his professional career, was enough to seal all three points for the Owls in a tight game at Ewood Park.

Carvalhal said: “We knew this would be a tough game, so we knew how we had to play.

“We wanted to be compact and block Blackburn from creating chances and we did this.

“In the first half we created some really good chances and we deserved the goal that we scored.

“In the second half we knew we must close all the doors and windows to keep Blackburn in the dark.

“I must say I am very proud to be manager of this team and these players, we are in a good moment.”

The head coach spoke highly of Fletcher who capped off another strong performance with his landmark century goal.

He added: “It is not easy to adapt to our style of play.

“Some players take more time than others to get used to our style of play, but Fletcher has come and done very well.

“It is not just about his goals or his assists, the most important thing is his work rate for the team.”
