Report: Blackburn 0-1 Wednesday

27 September 2016

A dream goal from Steven Fletcher – the 100th of his career – saw Wednesday post their first away win of the season.

The Scotland international produced a moment of first half magic to settle a close clash over the Pennines, smashing home a blistering strike to give the Owls their fourth win from five games.

The winner illuminated a game that never really sparked, which will matter little to a Wednesday side slowly but surely climbing the table.

After a cagey opening, Rovers were first to show through ex-Owl Ben Marshall, who took aim from distance on the angle but Keiren Westwood was down smartly to parry wide.

Then moments later, with 21 minutes on the clock, Wednesday struck – and how.

Barry Bannan played in Fletcher 20 yards out and little seemed on but the striker flicked the ball up before unleashing an unstoppable half volley that gave the despairing Jason Steele no chance.

It was a timely boost for the Owls and Fletcher – full of confidence – span his marker on the half hour mark and drilled a low shot that beat Steele but this time the far post too.

For Rovers, new recruit Marvin Emnes was the biggest threat, causing concern with trickery and pace.

Emnes crossed nicely on 36 minutes for Sam Gallagher and the teenager’s header brushed the top of the net.

Liam Palmer and Bannan went mightily close before half time and the Owls went down the tunnel in the box seat.

Blackburn introduced Danny Graham early in the second half as they sought a way back into the game, while the Owls brought on Fernando Forestieri.

But most of the play stayed in the middle, with both sides struggling to exert true authority.

Indeed, chances came at a premium through almost the whole of the second half, with the only drama coming 12 minutes from time when Emnes thumped past Westwood into the roof of the net only to be denied by the offside flag.

Wednesday: Westwood, Palmer, Lees, Hutchinson (Loovens 60), Reach, Buckley, Lee, Jones, Bannan, Hooper (Forestieri 73), Fletcher (Nuhiu 81)
