Stunning fightback for Owls at Vicarage Road

20 September 2016

Sheffield Wednesday Under-23s secured an emphatic 4-1 win over Watford on Monday evening at Vicarage Road.

The visitors had to come from behind but goals from Jack Stobbs (2), Devante Rodney and Warren Clarke sealed an impressive victory for the Owls.

Ex-Liverpool man Jerome Sinclair gave the Hornets the lead with just seven minutes on the clock.

Dan Wallis made a good stop from Charlie Rowan’s free kick just outside the box but was powerless to stop Sinclair on the rebound.

The Owls’ response, though, was swift and decisive.

Jack Stobbs levelled matters on 18 minutes with a long range effort that squirmed under the grasp of Hornets goalkeeper Charlie Bannister.

The equaliser gave Wednesday a timely boost and five minutes later, the game was turned on its head.

Sean Clare was tripped in the box after bursting past three challenges and Stobbs calmly converted the spot kick.

With Watford rocked by the Owls’ quickfire double, worse was to come for the hosts before the break.

The lively Devante Rodney was alert to pounce on Adrian Mariappa’s attempted backpass and the striker applied a neat finish to give the Owls a two-goal cushion.

The next goal was always likely to be key and moments after Watford skipper Carl Stewart struck the upright, Wednesday landed the knockout blow nine minutes from time.

Warren Clarke cut into the box with pace from the right and his low strike found the bottom corner via a touch from defender Rowan.

SWFC: Wallis, Centeno, O'Grady, Thorniley, Emanuelson, Stobbs, Clare, Murphy (Lee 81), Penney (Preston 89); Clarke, Rodney (Hirst 64)
