Under-18s back to winning ways

27 February 2017

Following a rare defeat against Birmingham last time out, the Owls Under-18s made a swift return to winning ways on Saturday.

The Wednesday youngsters overcame Leeds United 3-0 at Thorp Arch to go second in the Under-18 Professional Development League.

The Owls were in front from as early as the 10th minute, when Joe Cook converted from close range from a corner.

In a pulsating first half, Wednesday continued to have the upper hand and went close through Alex Hunt, who blazed over the bar after a neat touch from Fraser Preston.

Preston forced United goalkeeper Will Huffer into making a strong save on the half hour mark and it was more of the same in terms of chances and pressure after the break.

George Hirst burst past the Leeds’ backline shortly after the restart but Huffer was quick off his line to clear the danger.

Huffer’s heroic goalkeeping kept the hosts just a goal behind as he somehow plucked away Hirst’s firm free kick which was destined for the top corner.

But Leeds eventually caved in to the relentless pressure on 77 minutes when trialist Alie Bangura struck just yards from goal to double the Owls’ advantage.

The Owls added a third just moments later when Hirst rifled home a powerful strike to seal a terrific win for Wednesday.

Owls coach Steven Haslam said: “It was a dominant display against a young Leeds team where we controlled the game throughout, passed the ball very well and there were lots of positives."
