Under-18s back with a bang

28 January 2017

The Owls’ Under-18s posted an impressive 5-2 win against Hull at Middlewood Road on Saturday, with defender Joe Cook bagging an unlikely treble.

Fraser Preston chipped in with a brace as the hosts ran out comfortable winners.

After a mini break due to the FA Youth Cup-tie with Chelsea that was ultimately postponed – together with the weather claiming the league clash with Sheffield United - Wednesday were back in action and hit the front after just four minutes.

Joe West swung a teasing cross into the mix from the left and Preston headed home from six yards.

But almost from the resumption, the Tigers were level from the penalty spot through Marc Kelledy to give the Owls a jolt.

And it took Wednesday just ten minutes to regain the lead – another fine feed from West converted, this time by Cook.

Liam Williams then went close, heading just over the crossbar, but the Owls did make it 3-1 on the half-hour when Cook applied the final touch to an Alex Hunt corner.

Wednesday were in the driving seat and put the game out of Hull’s reach on 55 minutes, with Preston sliding under the goalkeeper following a fine ball from debutant Stefan Gavrilov.

It was almost five when Ben Hughes fired over before Wednesday were hit on the counter just past the hour and Keane Lewis-Potter found the top corner from 25 yards.

But Wednesday duly regrouped and Cook completed his hat-trick on 70 minutes after an exquisite chip from Liam Waldock bounced off both posts.

Wednesday: Brazinskas, Hughes, West, Williams, Lee (Reaney 77) , Cook, Waldock (Shaw 77), Price, Gavrilov, Hunt, Preston (Swaine 65)
