Under-18s secure play-off slot

8 April 2017

The Owls’ Under-18s have qualified for the play-offs having secured the point they needed against Colchester on Saturday morning.

The league clash in Essex ended 2-2 and Wednesday will now travel to Coventry for the single leg play off semi final.

Ben Wilkinson’s side started brightly and were a goal to the good on 20 minutes when Liam Williams planted a firm header home.

On the half-hour it was 2-0 as Leyton Swaine volleyed in smartly at the back post to put the visitors in the driving seat.

Just before the break, though, Colchester halved the deficit and they started the second half with confidence.

Dan Wallis made two smart saves but the hosts would not be denied and salvaged a point via a deflected free kick.

Still there was drama when the U’s were reduced to ten men when Wednesday substitute George Hirst was felled when clean through on goal.

Thus the Owls finished the game in the ascendancy and were thwarted three times in the last 20 minutes by a combination of stout defending and good goalkeeping but won the point required.

Wednesday travel to play Coventry in the play-off on Saturday 22 April.
