Under-18s suffer derby defeat

14 March 2017

The Owls’ Under-18s were defeated in their top of the table clash with local rivals Sheffield United on Tuesday afternoon.

The Blades came from behind after Jordan Lonchar struck before the break on his return from injury but second half goals from Jordan Hallam and Horatio Hirst sealed the win for the visitors.

Wednesday won the previous meeting back in November with two goals from George Hirst and the striker almost opening the scoring on this occasion after seven minutes when his low strike clipped the upright.

A tough-tackling typical derby affair then unfolded before the Owls hit the front on 15 minutes.

Fraser Preston and Hirst combined superbly to tee up Lonchar, who drilled low into the back of the net.

The Blades sought a quick reply as Stephen Mallon saw his low effort flash just wide of Dan Wallis’ post.

The visitors began the second half brightly and drew level just past the hour mark when Hallam fired low past Wallis.

Ciaran Brennan produced a vital challenge to deny Hallam a second goal as the game developed into an exciting end to end encounter.

George Hirst went close from Lonchar’s dangerous centre but United goalkeeper Hugo Warhurst did well between the sticks to hold on.

Wednesday threatened twice in the final few moments, first George Hirst and Liam Williams denied from a goalmouth scramble before the former shot over the bar following a swift move upfield.

The decisive goal came late in the contest in favour of the Blades when a swift counter attack was neatly finished by Horatio Hirst.

Wednesday: Wallis, Brennan, West, Kirby, Williams, Cook, Lonchar (Hughes 80), Price (Borukov 84), Hirst, Waldock, Preston
