Understanding the competition

30 December 2016

Having toppled promotion favourites Newcastle on Boxing Day, Carlos Carvalhal says the Owls are prepared for a completely different challenge this weekend.

The Owls – buoyed by their fifth win in six games at St James’ Park last time out – head for Preston looking to continue their winning run in the Championship.

The head coach has underlined the unpredictable nature of the second tier and the need for 100% focus in all the games.

“You never know in this competition,” Carlos said.

“We understand the competition very well and we know that we did a very good performance at Newcastle - we did really very well in the game.

“We played well, we deserved the win against the strongest team of the competition in their stadium.

“But we don’t forget that some days before we had a lot of problems in our win against Rotherham.

“They are the team still at the bottom but they gave a lot of problems to us to win the game.

“I talked about this during the week before the Newcastle game, we never know if the Newcastle game will be more difficult than the Rotherham game.

“We know that Preston will be very tough. They will create different problems so we must be 100% again, fight a lot and do our work.”

Saturday’s Deepdale clash will be the second meeting between the two sides this month.

Wednesday overcame the Lilywhites 2-1 at Hillsborough four weeks ago and Carlos added:

“We played against them a few weeks ago at Hillsborough and we had a lot of problems to win to them.

“It will be a completely different game, with different problems to us. We know what we must do - we can’t play in Preston, the same way we played in Newcastle.

“They play very different football and we must give the correct answers.”
