Very special guests at Hillsborough

23 December 2016

Hillsborough played host this week to Somdej Phra Wannarat, the highest ranking Buddhist in Thailand, together with fellow monks from the primary Thai Temple in Sheffield.

This was the second visit to the club made by Somdej Phra Wannarat following the initial invitation extended by Owls chairman Dejphon Chansiri in April 2015.

Somdej Phra Wannarat blessed all areas around the stadium, consigning merit in particular to the souls of the 96 Liverpool supporters who lost their lives at Hillsborough in 1989 and all those who have left the Sheffield Wednesday family over the passage of time.

The supreme Buddhist also wished spirit and fortune to everyone connected with Sheffield Wednesday.

Mr Chansiri said: “It was my absolute pleasure to welcome Somdej Phra Wannarat to our club once again.

“Consigning merit and giving spirit is a central part of Thai culture, bringing fortune, happiness and eternal peace.

“It was my privilege to invite Somdej Phra Wannarat and his colleagues to Hillsborough as their ceremony represented a true honour for which I am eternally grateful.”
