Young Owls in a good place

4 October 2016

With the Under-18s having won each of their last four games, coach Danny Cadamarteri has hailed the turnaround in the team’s campaign.

The young Owls kicked off the season with three straight defeats but have since turned that form right on its head.

Cadamarteri told swfc.co.uk: “It’s credit to the boys after a difficult start. But we had a large number of first year scholars in the team and we just lacked that experience, which is key.

“The second years played a lot with the Under-23s and that’s great because we are here to develop the players.

“But it did leave the 18s a little light so when those players came back, their experience played a big part in the revival if you like.

“They have shown the younger lads that by taking the step-up – and some of them have also trained with the first team – the pathways for progression are there.”

While the in-form George Hirst has taken the headlines, Cadamarteri has recognised the striker’s consorts in the final third.

He continued: “George has been playing well and scoring goals but we should also mention Fraser Preston and Jordan Lonchar, who have been outstanding.

“Those three together must give us arguably the best options in the division.

“Elsewhere, the captain Connor Kirby has been so solid and the development of Liam Waldock has been fantastic.

“Liam is only 15-years-old and the way he can control games from central midfield is a joy to see.

“All the boys are learning, they are listening to the messages and taking instructions on board, with the results there to see.”
