Afobe's aim

31 March 2014

Owls loanee Benik Afobe is hopeful of making an impact during the final seven games of the campaign.

The Arsenal striker made a return to the starting XI on Saturday and scored a consolation goal in Wednesday’s defeat to Watford.

But having been given the chance to impress with the Owls, Afobe's aim to repay the faith shown by head coach Stuart Gray and said:

“Hopefully I have done enough to earn a start on Friday at Leicester and that will be a real challenge.

“I had the chance to impress on Saturday and I think I did well but we lost the game so we have to focus on Leicester.

“I’m not the first footballer to be frustrated at being on the bench but as an attacker, there’s always a chance you could get on and try and change the game.

“But as I said, we have to focus on Leicester now and be at our best. They look like they will be champions but before I came here, I know Wednesday beat them 2-1 here so we know they are beatable.”

While Afobe is uncertain as to what his future may hold, the Arsenal youngster is more interested in the short term and giving everything he has at Hillsborough.

But one thing that is for sure, the 21-year-old is thoroughly enjoying every minute with Wednesday and explained:

“It’s been very easy to settle in from day one. The boys have been good to me. The gaffer, the coaching staff and the fans have all taken to me so it has been pretty easy.

“My main aim when I got injured was to get fit and go out on loan in January or February, as I have done, and play as many games as I can.

“I’ll return to Arsenal in pre-season and sit down with the boss and see where I can go from there.

“I’ve got another year left at Arsenal but at the moment I’m just concentrating on the next seven games for Sheffield Wednesday.”
