Almost £2,000 raised for charity derby

25 June 2015

Last weekend saw a Sheffield Wednesday charity team win in a special annual match which saw almost £2,000 being raised for Sheffield organisations.

The charity match, the ‘Reds v Blues’, was part of a community day hosted by the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme and saw people flock to the event to enjoy activities and entertainment as well as the match.

Almost £2,000 was raised for Cavendish Cancer Care, the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme and the Sheffield United Community Foundation.

Former Owls players including Terry Curran, Julian Watts, Matty Hamshaw and Lee Peacock took part in the match.

Also making up the charity squad were television personalities including Sky Sports presenter David Garrido and TV presenter Rob Lamarr as well as boxers Ryan Rhodes, Daniel Slaney and Ross The Boss Burkinshaw.

Visitors also enjoyed kickboxing demonstrations, music from the Oughtibridge brass band, Vivacity Choir, an air cadet mini assault course, a penalty shootout, an inflatable football pitch and rides and a FIFA 15 computer game tournament.

The Unity Law Cup kicked off the event which saw two teams from the Sheffield Wednesday disability team take part in a mini tournament. Teams from Mansfield, Barnsley, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham took part in the competition with Mansfield winning overall.

Sky Sport’s presenter David Garrido, who is also an ambassador for the club’s Community Programme, visited Hillsborough the day before the event to understand more about what they do.
David Garrido, Sky Sports News presenter and ambassador for the Community Programme, said:

“Seeing some of the projects that the Community Programme supports was fantastic - it's such an important part of our offering as a football club and how we connect with the community, and as a patron, I'm happy to be involved as much as I can."

"It was great to see big crowds out for an event supporting a fantastic cause - I'm just sorry I didn't last even 10 minutes because my hamstring went!  But it means that I've got unfinished business, so I'll definitely make amends with a proper performance when we retain the cup next year!
