Arsenal talent joins Owls

15 October 2013

Sheffield Wednesday have signed Arsenal goalkeeper Damian Martinez on an emergency loan deal.

The 21-year-old has joined the Owls for 28 days.

Martinez joined the Gunners’ academy in 2010 before being elevated to the first team squad at The Emirates one year later.

The highly-rated Argentine left North London in search of first team experience in the 2011/12 season, when he signed on loan for Oxford in League Two.

A regular for the Arsenal reserve side, Martinez has made two senior appearances for Arsene Wenger’s side, both coming in the 2012/13 campaign in the club’s Capital One Cup wins over Coventry and Reading.

During his steady rise through the ranks at Arsenal, the Gunners custodian has gained international recognition with Argentina.

The athletic goalkeeper has been capped at Under-17 and Under-20 level and has also received call ups to the senior squad.

Martinez has been allocated squad number 26 during his Hillsborough loan stay.
