31 August 2015

Sheffield Wednesday have signed talented midfielder Barry Bannan from Premier League side Crystal Palace.

The 20-cap Scotland international joins the Owls on a permanent contract until the end of June 2016.

Bannan will be eligible for Wednesday when the Championship resumes on Saturday week following the international break.

At the start of his career, the playmaker joined the Celtic academy in 2002 before heading south of the border to undergo a successful trial with Aston Villa, earning a two-year contract.

In the 2007/08 campaign, Bannan bagged 13 goals from midfield as the Midlanders won the Premier Academy League title. Having sufficiently impressed in the engine room, he penned a two-year professional contract at Villa Park.

The youngster debuted for Villa in the UEFA Cup in February 2009 and was loaned to Derby County to boost his experience. He scored on his debut for the Rams against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

A temporary switch to Blackpool followed and Bannan returned to Villa to make his Premiership debut in September 2010 before switching to Leeds United in another loan deal.

After making 61 appearances for Villa - and amid interest from numerous suitors - Bannan signed a three-year contract with Crystal Palace for an undisclosed fee in September 2013, re-uniting with Ian Holloway, under whom he played at Blackpool.

Bannan made 22 appearances for the Eagles before joining Bolton Wanderers on loan as part of the deal that took Lee Chung-Yong to Selhurst Park last season, featuring 16 times for the Trotters.
