Buxton battling for the shirt

  • Lewis Buxton glad to be back
  • Defender is Owls' longest-serving player
  • Stopper faces stiff competition for starting berth

Owls longest-serving player Lewis Buxton says he is glad to be back in the fold after being sidelined with a knee injury.

The full back - who joined the Owls in 2008, originally on loan from Stoke - made his return against Manchester City and kept his place in the starting eleven for the trip to Cardiff on Saturday.

Up until the clash with City at The Etihad, Buxton has had a watching brief and admitted it has been a frustrating period.

He said: “I’m delighted to be back again and have enjoyed playing a part even though we lost both games but I’m sure the results will come, starting tomorrow.

“It’s been frustrating but I think as you get older, you learn to keep your head down and keep going and hopefully I can have a good season from now.”

But the stopper knows he will have a job on his hands earning a place in the team.

Competition is strong with the Owls’ backline proving a tough nut to crack in the Championship and Liam Palmer in fine form at right back.

He added: “It’s been a good start, the lads have done well, looked solid and now I’m looking to stay in the team and start winning games.

“I’m well aware that if I don’t perform, the gaffer has options. Liam has done really well at full back and can do equally as well in midfield. That can only be good for the team.”
