Chris Kirkland back with Sheffield Wednesday

8 July 2014

Sheffield Wednesday have re-signed international goalkeeper Chris Kirkland following the expiry of his S6 deal.

The popular goalkeeper has inked a one-year contract at Hillsborough.

Kirkland has proved a popular performer during his two years with Wednesday, scooping a raft of awards for his consistent displays between the sticks.

He now extends his S6 stay by a further 12 months.

The England cap began his career with Coventry City, swiftly developing into one of the most coveted young goalkeepers in the country.

Premiership giants Liverpool paid £6m for his services and Kirkland proved a key figure in the Reds’ march to the Champions League final of 2004-05 in Istanbul, where they overcame AC Milan in the most dramatic of circumstances.

Kirkland went on to enjoy loan spells with West Bromwich Albion and Wigan Athletic and signed a permanent deal with the Latics, going on to make 120 senior appearances for the North West side.

Internationally, the 31-year-old won eight caps for the England Under-21s and featured regularly for the senior squad, earning his maiden full cap against Greece.

Kirkland joined Wednesday in the summer of 2012 and has since posted 83 appearances for the club.
