Stuart Gray hailed his side’s win at Middlesbrough on Saturday – although he confessed to some nerves towards the end of the game.

Wednesday were coasting 3-0 at The Riverside but conceded two penalties late in the contest to give the hosts a potential lifeline.

But the Owls held out to ensure their impressive start to the new campaign continued.

He said: “It was a bit nervy in the last few seconds but we thoroughly deserved the win.

“I think the first one was a penalty but not the second because it hit Glenn Loovens square in the belly.

“But we held out for the points and the penalties aside, I am delighted.

“We played ever so well, we controlled the game and it should have been a lot more comfortable than it was.”

Gray was pleased with the team as a whole and individually the goalscorers Atdhe Nuhiu (2) and Stevie May.

He said: “Atdhe has started the season really well and the only thing he was missing was more goals because of the chances we’ve created.

“But he has taken his chances today and I’m a big believer that the harder you work, the luckier you get.

“Atdhe has put a real shift in today but so have all the lads.

“I’m really pleased for Stevie May, he showed his striker instincts and took his goal really well.

“He’s a natural goalscorer and this is just the start for him.”
