Elite scholars in final stages for National College squad

11 November 2015

Two elite football students from the club’s Education programme have made it through to the final trials to play for the National College team.

Both aged just 16, Lewis Jewitt and Frank Koromo, have been selected to trial for the programme which lets sports students gain invaluable skills and experience.

The programme provides a unique player development pathway for college students to gain international playing experience and training in a professional setting.

If successful at the final round Lewis and Frank will take part in high quality training, fixtures and international experience. The duo will take part in the final trials this Sunday.

Both students study on the club’s Education Programme’s BTEC Elite Football Development programme which gives youngsters the unique opportunity to ultimately progress to a professional playing contract. The course is thanks to a new partnership between Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield FC and Rotherham College.

The National Team programme is working in conjunction with sporting bodies AoC Sport and Future Elite Sport to provide elite sports students the chance to represent the country and their education programme.

Ken Merry, Associate Principal: Curriculum at Rotherham College, said: “This is a great achievement for the boys and for Rotherham College. They’ve done really well to get this far and we wish them all the best for the trials on Sunday.”

Spencer Taylor, CSR Manager at Sheffield Wednesday, said: “To make it to the final trials is an outstanding achievement for Lewis and Frank and we’re really proud of them to get so far. They’ve both shown an excellent commitment to the course and to football and I think this is shown by getting this far in the National programme.”

Lewis and Frank have been sponsored by Graham: The Plumbers' Merchant and the Rotherham/Barnsley Chamber of Commerce for the trial. They have kindly agreed to support their trails and if they should be successful they will have their equipment and travel paid for.
