George Hirst at the double for England

7 February 2016

Young Owl George Hirst bagged a brace on his England Under-17 debut against Germany on Sunday at the Municipal Stadium in Portugal.

The Three Lions were pegged back to 2-2 following Hirst’s first half double in the Algarve Tournament but Germany, having missed a penalty, hit back to earn a share of the spoils.

Hirst in the spotlight on 17 minutes when the Wednesday striker expertly finished an Ed Francis through-ball after leaving two defenders in his wake.

Then, nine minutes later, Hirst doubled his and England’s tally with a cool hit in front of goal following good approach play from the engine room.

But Germany were far from finished and re-grouped for the second half that saw Ipswich goalkeeper Nick Hayes save a penalty before Florian Baak halved the arrears and substitute Renat Dadashov equalised at the last.

England, who drew 1-1 with hosts Portugal last Friday, play their final game of the tournament against the Netherlands on Tuesday.
