Gray reflects on Reading reverse

31 January 2015

  • Wednesday went down 2-0 at Reading
  • Only third away defeat for the Owls
  • Stuart Gray disappointed with defending

Having started the game well at Reading on Saturday, the Owls went on to lose 2-0 at The Madejski Stadium and Stuart Gray pinpointed poor defending for the rare away defeat.

The Royals reverse was only the third time Wednesday have been beaten away from home this season and Gray felt the loss could have been avoided.

He said: “We started brightly, moved the ball well but then we have given two goals away that could and should have been avoided.

“We have to stop crosses coming into the box and if we don’t do that, we can’t leave players unmarked in the box.

“The frustrating thing is that we are better than that. We have been solid and well organised away from home so we have to go back to what we are good at and fast.

“This division is wide open – we were nine points off the play-offs before the game and we’re nine points off after it.

“The chance is still there for anyone who can put a decent run of results together.”

At the other end of the field, Gray was also left frustrated, particularly by his side’s inability to trouble Reading keeper Adam Federici for most of the game.

He also confirmed talks with Romanian striker Sergiu Bus but confirmed the deal is not yet done.

Gray added: “I have been busy preparing the team today and talks have been going on back at Hillsborough.

“I’m aware of the pictures of the boy on the internet and we’re almost there.

“Once the deal is complete, we will announce it.

“I’m hopeful we can get him in because we need someone who can out the ball in the back of the net. I can hardly remember laying a glove on Reading and we didn’t work the keeper apart from once in the first half.

“Not for the first time this season, I have seen the ball flash across the six-yard box and we need someone to throw themselves at it and if everything ends up in the net that’s fine, as long as the ball does too.”
