Helan on target

13 July 2013

A solitary first half strike from new signing Jeremy Helan gave the Owls victory against Scunthorpe on Saturday.

The pre-season friendly at Glanford Park was played in blistering conditions but the visitors kept their cool and the lion’s share of the game to emerge triumphant.

And it was man of the moment Helan - who signed for the Owls on a permanent transfer on Thursday - that proved the difference, stabbing home the only goal of the game on 41 minutes.

After a relaxed opening under the beaming sun, it was Wednesday who posed the first real threat on the 15-minute mark when Miguel Llera headed a Rhys McCabe corner inches past the post with the aid of a deflection.

That opening seemed to spark the contest into life and moments later, Matt Sparrow had a golden opportunity to send the home side into the lead but the midfielder miskicked an attempted volley ten yards from goal.

Jermaine Johnson went close for the Owls as half time approached following some trademark trickery in the penalty area, before Sparrow spurned another glorious chance for the Iron, hitting high and wide having burst into the box unmarked.

But just as is seemed the teams would be heading down the tunnel all square, Wednesday seized the advantage.

Helan harried David Mirfin into an error in the area and advanced on the angle to slot confidently beyond Sam Slocombe.

The Owls started the second period with confidence and Helan tested Slocombe with a low drive, then the new recruit turned provider for Johnson but the pace ace sidefooted over the bar.

Scunthorpe – managed by ex-SWFC boss Brian Laws and containing fellow former Owls Sean McAllister, Deon Burton, Eddie Nolan and Etienne Esajas in their squad – enjoyed a purple patch in terms of possession as the second 45 unfolded but Chris Kirkland remained untroubled.

Wednesday were dangerous on the break, though, as was evidenced on the hour when McCabe thumped a rasping drive that crashed against the angle of post and crossbar.

But the hosts could and should have levelled midway through the half when Christian Ribeiro sent a teasing ball low into the danger zone only for Matt Godden to clip wide with the goal at his mercy.

Jamie Wootton went close for Scunthorpe following a clever set piece and Miguel Llera did likewise at the other end but the score stayed the same as Wednesday stepped up their preparations for the 2013/14 Championship campaign.
