Howard bolsters Owls attack

28 March 2013

The Owls have bolstered their attacking options with the emergency loan signing of experienced striker Steve Howard from League 1 side Hartlepool United.

The 36-year-old frontman has penned a deal that will keep him at Hillsborough until the end of the season.

Howard began his professional career with Hartlepool in August 1995 and made 164 appearances for the Pools, scoring 32 goals, before becoming Northampton Town’s record signing in February 1999.

After two years at The Sixfield Stadium in which Howard made 86 appearances and scored 18 goals, the striker moved to Luton Town in March 2001.

The powerful forward quickly became a fans’ favourite at Kenilworth Road, notching up over 200 appearances, scoring 96 goals along the way.

Howard attracted the attention of several Championship clubs on the back of his success with Luton and agreed terms with Derby County in July 2006 – signing a three-year deal for a fee of £1m.

The Durham-born hitman featured 63 times for the Rams, 20 of which were in the top flight, before he was loaned to Championship side Leicester City in the 2007/08 campaign.

The Foxes soon made Howard’s move permanent, signing him on a three and a half year deal in January 2008 for a fee of £1.5m.

A productive period was to follow with the Midlanders as Howard aided Leicester to an immediate return to the Championship in 2008/09, scoring 15 goals for the club in all competitions during that productive campaign.

Howard was subsequently crowned as Leicester’s Player of the Year.

After 146 appearances and 28 goals, he departed Leicester and re-joined Hartlepool in the summer of 2012.

The hitman will wear shirt number 29 for Wednesday and is eligible to feature on Saturday as the Owls face Barnsley at Hillsborough.
