Howard's way

27 November 2013

Owls legend Howard Wilkinson returned to S6 this week – to pass on his wealth of experience to the Wednesday Youth Development Phase players.

Howard, who turned 70 last week, re-donned the track suit to host a training session for the youngsters and clearly enjoyed rolling back the years.

He told swfc.co.uk: “Dean Ramsdale, the academy manager, asked me if I would like to come down for a session and I like to think it was a pleasant diversion for the players.

“It’s always nice to see a fresh face and new voice. I have to say I was impressed with the level of skill and the work rate and in particular how they responded so quickly to the different drills.

“I always said the best thing in the world is playing and coaching is next on the list. That feeling never leaves you and I was pleased to play a part.”

Howard’s son Ben is extending the family tradition in his role as Youth Development Phase coach at the Owls’ academy.

Wilkinson junior was on hand to see his father put the boys through their paces on Tuesday night and quipped:

“He was really good, I don’t remember him being like that when I was a kid!

“But seriously, the boys responded ever so well and they can only benefit from a session like that.

“They are a good group, they take ideas on board and hopefully will go on to achieve in the game.”
