Hutchinson commits future to Wednesday

15 January 2016

Sheffield Wednesday have moved to secure the long term services of midfielder Sam Hutchinson.

The 26-year-old was in the final year of his contract at Hillsborough but has now signed a new two and a half year deal.

Hutchinson will remain an Owl until the summer of 2018.

The tough-tackling midfield man initially joined the Owls on loan from Premier League giants Chelsea in February 2014 before his switch to Hillsborough was made permanent the following summer.

His combative and no-nonsense displays have added significant steel to the Owls’ engine room during his S6 stint.

In total, Hutchinson has made 51 appearances for Wednesday and is currently enjoying his most productive campaign under head coach Carlos Carvalhal.

The Londoner featured on 21 occasions for the Owls this season and has been a key performer in both midfield and in central defence when called upon.

It is that versatile nature that has proved a big asset for Wednesday and will no doubt play a big part going forward as the Owls aim for Premier League football.

Hutchinson initially rose through the ranks at Chelsea, making four appearances for the Stamford Bridge side.

During his time with the Blues, Hutchinson enjoyed loan spells with Nottingham Forest and Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem before settling at Hillsborough.

Hutchinson has scored one goal this season which came in the 3-0 League Cup win over Arsenal at Hillsborough, the strike a just reward after a terrific performance against the Gunners.
