Into the lions' den

31 March 2015

“We threw him into the lions' den against the league leaders and he responded magnificently” – was Barnsley manager Lee Johnson’s assessment of Joe Wildsmith on Saturday.

The young Wednesday product made his Football League debut for the Reds against Bristol City after penning a loan deal at Oakwell earlier in the week.

Wildsmith made a string of impressive saves to earn the Reds a point at Ashton Gate and now wants to kick on and make the most of the opportunity.

“It’s a great move for me, hopefully it’s the next step in my career,” the 19-year-old said.

“I went to Alfreton Town on loan at the end of last season and got some welcome game-time.

“But to come to a League One side is a massive jump for me, so hopefully I will be successful here.

“The best way for me to get first team football this year is by coming out on loan, so I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”

He added: “What I need now is senior football.

“I train with the squad every day at Sheffield Wednesday and it’s a great experience.

“But now I have the chance to get recognition at first team level.”
