It's what we deserved

  • Owls claim 1-0 win over Reading
  • Keiren Westwood saved Glenn Murray's penalty
  • First victory of the Championship campaign at Hillsborough

Owls goalkeeper Keiren Westwood played a big part in Wednesday’s first home win of the season against Reading.

The former Sunderland man kept out Glenn Murray’s first half penalty – a moment which head coach Stuart Gray described as the turning point.

But a modest Westwood was full of praise for his team mates after the game and said:

“People will look at the penalty but Semedo has thrown his head at everything, Atdhe has done the same when we needed to dig in and those contributions are just as important.

“We worked hard together to keep the ball out of our goal and as a unit, I think it was a good performance.”

Stevie May went on to secure the win as the Scot’s free kick after the break took a deflection before nestling into the Kop net.

And Westwood believes the Owls deserved that stroke of fortune and added:

“We played really well against Forest the other week and didn’t get anything from the game. Against Reading, I don’t think we played as well but we’ve dug in and come out with a 1-0 win.

“I’m delighted to have made the save but I’m happier we won the game 1-0.

“Stevie’s free kick took a deflection and I was delighted to see it hit the back of the net.

“Luck evens itself out in this game. At Bolton, we didn’t score despite dominating and had two cleared off the line but we managed to get that bit of luck against Reading.

“They are a good side and maybe the game could have gone either way but it went ours and we’re happy with that.”
