Just the tonic

1 December 2014

Adding three points to the board on Saturday at Hillsborough was just the tonic Wednesday needed, according to Owls skipper Glenn Loovens.

The captain told swfc.co.uk that the win over Wigan has given everyone connected with the club a huge lift.

Loovens has rued the Owls’ luck in recent weeks, particularly Stevie May’s strike at Huddersfield that crashed against bar and post before cleared to safety.

But in an ironic reversal of fortune, having equalised for Wednesday in the first half, May went on to bag the winner – a header which struck the woodwork twice before the officials gave the goal.

He said: “The last few games we have played, we have been in every one and performed well but we felt we lacked a bit of luck.

“At Huddersfield, it went from bar to post and out and now, post to post and it goes in!

“It’s a fine line in football and against Wigan, we were on the right side of it.

“We went without a win for a long time so to get one, at home in front of our own fans, has given everybody a big lift.”

He added: “Credit to the players because they kept fighting, kept believing and in the end we got a result we really deserved.

“There is a good spirit in this group and we will never give up and always keep pushing.

“Our heads didn’t drop when we conceded and we went straight up the other end and got the equaliser. That’s how we have to perform.”
