Lavery in Ireland Under-21 squad

5 March 2014

Owls striker Caolan Lavery is set for another international outing this evening as Northern Ireland Under-21s face Italy in Lurgan.

The fixture is a UEFA European Under-21 Championship Qualifier at Mourneview Park, with kick off at 4.00pm and the 21-year-old is looking forward to the challenge.

He said: “It should be a good match. We’re at home so the boys are looking forward to it and hopefully getting a positive result.

“Unfortunately we can’t qualify now but it’s always good to play against the best possible opposition and Italy are a very strong side.

“You are learning every time you play against the best players from their countries. The focus is so high that you have to be switched on at all times, just like you are with first-team games. I’ve learned a lot.”

Lavery has rose to the fore this season with Wednesday, making ten appearances so far for the Owls and scoring two goals.

His recent run in the first team was preceded by a successful loan spell with Plymouth earlier in the campaign, which saw the Northern Ireland Under-21 score three times for the Pilgrims.

In terms of his career with Wednesday and on the international stage, the youngster is looking to progress on both fronts and added:

“It would be great to get a full call-up. It’s what you look forward to when you work through the age groups. You want to play for the senior side. If I was to get a senior call-up, I would be delighted.

“But right now, I’ve just got to keep doing what I am doing. I am putting in good performances. I just need to keep playing well and hopefully let my football do the talking.”
