Lewis Buxton set for landmark appearance

30 September 2014

  • Lewis Buxton set to make 200th appearance
  • Defender is the Owls' longest-serving player
  • Isle of Wight product joined Wednesday in 2008

Owls defender Lewis Buxton is one game away from making his 200th appearance for the Owls.

The 30-year-old joined Wednesday on loan from Stoke in October 2008 and made 15 appearances in a successful three-month loan spell before returning to the Britannia.

But Buxton was soon on his way back to S6 and signed permanently with the Owls until 2011.

Since that time, the Isle of Wight product has become Wednesday’s longest-serving player.

Ahead of tonight’s meeting with Ipswich, where Buxton is in contention to reach 200 games, he said:

“It’s a number. I will get on and enjoy my football and maybe look at that record after I’ve packed things in.

“I’m delighted to be back training and playing again. It was frustrating when I was injured but that’s behind me now and I want to kick on.”

With fewer players reaching such milestones and the constant changing nature of football club’s in the modern game, the figure is testament to Buxton’s many years of hard work at Hillsborough.

He added: “There are a lot of changes that happen now and managers maybe don’t last as long as they used to so I’m happy to stay here as long as possible.

“I enjoy my football here. I have always felt that the club was not far away from doing something. It only takes a few things to fall into place and hopefully that will happen this season.

“It’s always been exciting. Hopefully this season will be exciting for a more positive reason.

“If we can get a good feeling around the place like when we got promoted in 2012 with the fans really pushing the lads on, I really feel we can gain some momentum.”
