Loovens checks in

3 December 2013

Sheffield Wednesday have signed Glenn Loovens on a short term deal.

The Dutch international defender joins the Owls as a free agent.

Loovens is a vastly experienced centre half who kicked off his career with Dutch giants Feyenoord, going on to make his European debut against Dynamo Kiev at the age of just 19.

He moved to these shores on loan with Cardiff City for the whole of the 2005/06 campaign and went on to pen a permanent deal in the Welsh capital.

Loovens’ impressive form for the Bluebirds prompted interest from clubs north and south of the border and the stopper signed for Celtic for a reported fee of £2.1m.

Following four years in the SPL - a stint that also included Champions League football – Loovens left for Spain, where he represented Real Zaragoza in La Liga until last summer.

The 30-year-old has six Under-21 caps for Holland and two at senior level.

He will wear shirt number 36 for the Owls and is eligible for Tuesday night’s Sky Bet Championship clash with Leicester at Hillsborough.
