Marco Matias signs for Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday have signed Portuguese attacking midfielder Marco Matias for an undisclosed fee, subject to international clearance.

The 26-year-old has signed a four-year deal at Hillsborough having joined from Primeira Liga side Nacional.

Matias moves to Hillsborough after posting his most successful campaign to date with Nacional last term, scoring a hugely impressive 20 goals in 36 appearances in the Portuguese top tier and helping the club to a seventh-place finish.

Having graduated through the ranks at European giants Sporting Lisbon, Matias enjoyed loan spells in his homeland with Varzim SC, CD Fatima and Real Sport Clube before switching to Primeira Liga outfit Vitoria Guimaraes in 2010.

The wideman then had a further loan spell, this time with Segunda Liga side Freamunde, before returning to his parent club to score ten goals in 56 appearances.

Matias also represented Guimaraes in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League.

The following season, Nacional came calling for Matias, who promptly found a rich vein of form in the final third.

He was a regular on the scoresheet throughout the 2014/15 Primeira Liga term, scoring 17 times whilst also notching three goals in the Europa League and the Taça de Portugal.

The European star has been capped on the international stage, playing five games at Under-21 level for Portugal.
