National Citizen Service programme a hit with students

17 July 2014

  • National Citizen Service programme proves a hit with students
  • Key aims to develop leadership and communication skills
  • SWFC Community Programme recruiting for more participants

Sheffield Wednesday’s Community Programme arrived back from their five-day residential on the second wave of National Citizen Service (NCS) this summer.

The project saw 75 16 to 17-year-olds head to Hawkshead in the Lake District to kick start their NCS summer.

NCS is a government-funded youth programme designed to bring together young people from a wide range of backgrounds and teach them how to communicate and work as a team while contributing to their local community.

As well as taking part in outdoor activities, students had the opportunity to organise various charity events and volunteer in the Sheffield area.

The projects have varied from delivering events in a sheltered scheme in Hillsborough to organising a fundraiser at Richmond Park.

Participants travelled to Hawkshead in the Lake District to take part in caving, climbing and kayaking to name a few of the fun activities. This is where the youngsters were able to develop their leadership qualities, teamwork and communication skills during the adventure.

One of the social action projects saw participants organise a cake sale in aid of the Sheffield Royal Society for the blind, raising over £50 alongside the sheltered scheme.

Lucy Shuttleworth, SWFC NCS Coordinator, said: “The bake sale was a huge success and demonstrates how hard the young people have worked.

“This programme shows how NCS can make a positive impact on local communities.

“It’s been a privilege to work with such a great group of young people from all areas of Sheffield and see how they have developed throughout the programme.”

As recognition for all the hard work and success of the NCS Programme, a graduation event will be held in September for all NCS participants that took part over the summer.
