New international call for Westwood

23 September 2014

  • Owls' keeper in preliminary squad
  • Ireland play Gibraltar and Germany
  • Westwood in fine form for Wednesday

Keiren Westwood has been named in the preliminary Republic of Ireland squad for two upcoming European 2016 Championship qualifiers.

The Irish host Gibraltar on 11 October in Dublin before travelling to Germany three days later to take on the reigning world champions.

Westwood was also in the recent Republic of Ireland squad that faced Oman and Georgia but a bout of tonsillitis dictated the goalkeeper’s withdrawal.

The 29-year-old has been in fine form for Wednesday since joining over the summer, posting five clean sheets from seven league games so far.

Westwood crucially saved a Glenn Murray penalty last Saturday against Reading, giving the Owls the foundation for a 1-0 win at Hillsborough.
