Nicky Weaver has been confirmed as the new Owls’ academy goalkeeping coach.

The former Wednesday custodian returns to the club where he enjoyed two separate stints as a player during a near two-decade career between the sticks.

Weaver will work primarily with the Under-18s down, although he will also plug into the Under-21 set-up.

He told swfc.co.uk: “I was talking to the club over the summer and now it’s done, I’m delighted to be back.

“This is my club, the club I have supported all my life. I was lucky enough to play for Wednesday in two separate spells and now I am back as a coach.

“There’s no substitute for playing and part of me wanted to carry on but once this opportunity came up, it was too good to turn down.

“My brief is to work with the young goalkeepers and pass on the experience I have picked up during my career and make it enjoyable as I can for the boys."

Weaver made 54 senior appearances for the Owls and was a popular performer at Hillsborough.

The 35-year-old represented a raft of clubs, most notably Manchester City, where he gained legendary status for saving the decisive penalty in the third tier play-off final shootout of 1999.
