Owls ambitions

7 August 2012

Development squad duo Caolan Lavery and Matthew Fletcher are out to make an impression at Hillsborough during the imminent Championship season.

The young international players were signed to bolster the Owls‘ options for the 2012/13 campaign.

Lavery, 20, is a strong, mobile striker who, following a successful youth career in Canada, moved to Irish club Goodyear FC before joining Ipswich.

He was a regular on the scoresheet for the Tractor Boys’ youth side and attracted interest from Premier League clubs – in addition to international recognition with Northern Ireland.

Ipswich then offered Caolan a professional contract which he turned down and ultimately joined the Owls.

Fletcher, meanwhile, is also a striker. He began his career at Manly United in his native Australia before moving to England to join Sunderland on a three-year contract.

He top-scored for the Black Cats’ youth side during his first season at the club before being elevated to the reserves and his impressive subsequent performances resulted in a call-up to the Australian Under-20 national team for the Asian Cup and World Cup qualifiers.

Fletcher, 20, was offered a new deal at Sunderland in June 2011, which he rejected in favour of an opportunity elsewhere and he joined the Owls following a brief stint at Oxford United.
